10 Most Underrated Bands Of The '90s

3. Green River

There's not too many underrated bands of this decade that actually came from Seattle. After the rise of Nirvana on MTV, the rainy Northwest city became the epicenter for the mainstream press, with any old band getting signed to a major label. Then again, if you wanted to hear what grunge really sounded like, you needed to go back to a time before any of the flannel appeared in department stores.

Formed as a crusty punk affair, Green River had countless accolades before they had even released a note of music. Though no one knew it at the time, this supergroup of sorts was comprised of Mudhoney's Mark Arm and the main foundation of Pearl Jam with guitarist Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. These guys could have made some of the most incredible grunge anthems had they sticked together, but creative differences ended up driving a wedge in between the two camps.

While Ament and Gossard wanted to reach towards more mainstream sounds, Arm's desire to stay underground led to the band imploding before they released a proper follow up to their debut release Come on Down, with Arm forming Mudhoney and Ament and Gossard creating Mother Love Bone, which later folded into Pearl Jam. Though the members have remained on good terms (and have reunited on occasion), Green River might be the one supergroup that you didn't even know was super.
