10 Most Underrated Bands Of The '90s

2. Jane's Addiction

Many people tend to forget how much of a wasteland the music scene was in the early '90s. Long before the grunge scene got underway, nothing really was blowing up anymore, with hair metal falling by the wayside and being seen more as a novelty than a legitimate genre of music. Though Jane's Addiction never really got off the ground as much as their peers, they have had more of an influence on the alternative scene than you will ever know.

Starting in the late '80s with Nothing's Shocking, the band had a strange mix of influences, with songs that were as in tune with Led Zeppelin as they were with James Brown. Though the Red Hot Chili Peppers are known as the funk rock gods, these guys were right alongside them in the early years, with Dave Navarro having an equal proficiency in both heavy metal shred and down-in-the-groove funk strumming.

Though the band imploded before the alternative scene reached its apex, the members have kept quite busy, with Navarro joining the Chili Peppers for a brief stint and Perry Farrell giving birth to the Lollapalooza festival, which became ground zero for alternative bands going forward. Jane's Addiction might not be the face of alternative rock, but they were the first ones to plant the idea of alternative music in the mainstream consciousness.
