10 Most Underrated Bands Of The '90s

1. Sonic Youth

For as big as the alternative scene was in the '90s, it all came back around to punk attitude. These bands may have lit up the charts in their day, but even Kurt Cobain would maintain his love for underground bands until the day he died. Though its understandable that not every underground band took over the mainstream, Sonic Youth deserved much greater recognition for how much they contributed to the new wave of rock and roll.

Though the band saw their most commercially viable albums like Goo released in the '90s, the band actually dates back to the late '70s, where they came from the original New York punk movement. The era of CBGB's may have been on its last legs by the time they moved up the ranks, but the band managed to spin every creative idea from their hometown into one eclectic musical piece, with Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore having some of the most outlandish guitar parts in the history of rock and roll.

The band also deserves a lot of credit for encouraging label execs to go after the sounds of interesting acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam later down the line. Sonic Youth's albums might not be as successful as something like Nevermind, but without them coming first, the entire modern rock landscape would look entirely different.
