10 Most Underrated Blink 182 Songs
5. Pathetic - Dude Ranch
On their first albums like Cheshire Cat and Buddha, it was clear that Blink was going to have a lot of growing up to do before hitting the big leagues. Though we still had tracks like Carousel that have survived as part of the set to this day, no one's going to stand up and call something like Just About Done a song that changed their life or anything. If you had to start the maturation process, the glowup started the moment Dude Ranch started.
Hitting you like a slap in the face, that opening guitar riff from Tom feels like a precursor to the other songs that you would see later down the line, almost feeling like the father of riffs off of Dumpweed or Dysentery Gary. Although the lyrics are a little dark if you look at them closely, the message of feeling at home in your own skin is a lot more wholesome than the typical self-loathing that you find in other emo songs from around the same time.
Now's also a good time to bring up Scott Raynor's drums, which are absolutely savage on this track. While it's totally understandable why they traded up with Travis Barker later, there's something about the unpolished approach of Scott that made these songs really jump out of the speakers. Compared to the pop punk art project that Blink started as, this is where it stopped being a novelty and became something amazing.
