2. Grace Under Pressure - Rush

Rush fans are some of the most loyal fans in the entire music industry. Without any prominent mainstream attention, these prog giants have had one of the most impressive cult followings with a devotion that even rivals the obsession for the Grateful Dead. However, if you want to divide up the fanbase, the band's synthesizer period is a prime candidate to spark debate.

It's a cheap shot to say that the band's 80's synth period was a bit cheesy, but Grace Under Pressure holds up as another masterpiece in their catalog. The transition from playing Led Zeppelin style throwdowns to splashy keyboard runs is a bit strange, but the different instrumentation doesn't hinder the band's brilliant songwriting. Throughout every track, Neil Peart pens some of his most openhearted lyrics, from "Afterimage" being a dedication to the loss of a close friend to "Red Sector A" putting us into the perspective of a Jewish woman in a Nazi concentration camp.

Pretty heavy stuff...but many probably didn't give these tunes the time of day because of the humongous Casio presence in the mix. This might not be Rush's most ambitious musical undertaking, but once you start peeling back the layers of the songs, you realize just how much brilliance is hiding in the 80's sheen.
