10 Most Underrated Cover Songs In Hard Rock
2. Mercyful Fate - Metallica
Covers albums on principal tend to be ignored by the mainstream market. Oftentimes, these albums feel like nothing more than corporate cash-ins or an excuse for bands to make one more record before being free from their label. Even with its more notorious reputation, Metallica's collection of covers Garage Inc. was a lot more badass than you may give it credit for.
The love and care that was put into these tracks is palpable, with the band seemingly having a blast going through bands like Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, and even Bob Seger. Out of all the covers though, "Mercyful Fate" was definitely their most daring.
Each of the band members were huge fans of this metal outfit from Denmark, so playing just one song seemed a bit silly. Rather than just picking a few to cover separately, the band takes the listener on an 11-minute journey through 5 of the band's classics in one go. While other recent Metallica albums felt pretty sterile and manufactured, this song really showed the band free of their inhibitions and just letting themselves loose on their instruments. Even if the sound still feels like some dudes playing in a garage, Metallica could still hold their own as a damn good rock band.
