10 Most Underrated David Bowie Songs

9. Hallo Spaceboy (Pet Shop Boys Remix, 1996)

Perhaps one of his many recipes for longevity, Bowie was a noted collaborator whose partnerships encompassed a wide cross section of the musical landscape. From his long standing collaborators Tony Visconti and Mick Ronson, to the likes of Brian Eno and Iggy Pop, Bowie was always receptive to different methods and ideas.

The original version of Hallo Spaceboy appears on Bowie's 1995 album Outside, and is a dense yet accomplished attempt at replicating the industrial sound of such acts as Nine Inch Nails. It was one of Bowie's personal favorites on the album, describing it as a meeting of heavy metal with The Doors.

But when the most commercially successful British electronic act of the twentieth century got their hands on it, the track was elevated to new heights. The remixed version interspersed Bowie's brooding introspection with a danceable beat, while vocalist Neil Tennant's effeminate vocals provide the perfect antidote to Bowie's stoic delivery. Bowie approved of the remix and it was released as a single in 1996, even joining the Pet Shop Boys for a selection of television performances to promote the track.

Not all of Bowie's collaborations were a raging success, with the less said about his cringe-inducing music video with Mick Jagger for Dancing In The Street, the better. But this duet not only brought new life to an existing Bowie track, it even managed to eclipse the original.
