10 Most Underrated David Bowie Songs
2. Love Is Lost (2013)
Until Blackstar came along and moved the goalposts for all Bowie retrospection, Love Is Lost put forward a strong case as being his crowning achievement of the last two decades.
The second track in the list to be taken from his 2013 comeback album, The Next Day, Love Is Lost is one of Bowie's most poignant reflections on young love and regret.
At this stage of his career, Bowie is armed with the wisdom accumulated over his near 70 year life, and appears to be talking back to his younger, naive self. The line "It's the darkest hour, you're 22" would coincide with the release of Space Oddity, his emergence as an artist and, crucially, the end of his relationship with Hermione Farthingale. A source of great sorrow, the disoslution of this relationship was the source of artistic inspiration throughout his early career, even referencing his former love in the track Letter To Hermione.
Unlike many other songs featured here, such as a Cracked Actor or Queen Bitch, the track is a slow burner. It possesses an understated greatness that may not reveal itself upon first listen. The end refrain of "Oh what have you done?, Oh what have you done?" is devastatingly hypnotic and encourages repeated listen after repeated listen.
