10 Most Underrated Drummers In Rock
8. Dominic Howard - Muse
At the start of the '00s, it was no longer cool to be bombastic anymore. With acts like the Strokes and the White Stripes rising to prominence, a lot of the rhythmic structure present in modern rock songs was nothing more than the traditional garage rock sounds that we had heard a thousand times before. Just when people started to tune out, Dominic Howard released a sonic boom from behind his drum throne.
Whenever people bring up Muse, it's normally at the expense of the operatic vocals of Matt Bellamy, so much so that they forget what Howard is even doing. Compared to his contemporaries, Howard was one of the more eclectic drummers to rise to prominence, taking on everything from electronic samples to the regular kit depending on whatever the song called for.
Regardless of the musical taste he spanned, there was always a ton of muscle behind his delivery as well on some of the band's more forceful moments. Just one listen to a song like Assassin or Stockholm Syndrome just tells you that this is a guy who might be used to drumming in more heavy metal acts before finding his home with Muse. At a time when the drummer was falling back into just playing a supportive role, Dominic Howard threw caution to the wind and made his drumming hit like a cannon blast.
