10 Most Underrated Drummers In Rock

9. Larry Mullen Jr. - U2

Most rock fans tend to fall in either the love or hate category when it comes to U2. Even though there have been plenty of highlights over their career with albums like the Joshua Tree, the more holier than thou attitude that they have towards their causes have also turned off a fair amount of fans over the years. Instead of worrying about Bono's politics and life choices, take a look at the back of the stage to see the real brilliance on display.

Being one of the most solid drummers in the world of rock, Larry Mullen Jr.'s timing always feels eerily precise on some of U2's finest records, long before drum machines were starting to become a thing. In addition to the perfect timing he has on albums like War, there is also an ingenious setup that he has going on in some of the band's classic material.

Take something like Pride (in the Name of Love), for instance. Instead of using the traditional snare sound, Mullen positioned every tom tom in just the right place to move his hand around the entire kit, making that fat sound that is known to fill stadiums. Even when the band reinvented themselves on Achtung Baby, Mullen's touch when it comes to electronic music wasn't too shabby either, embracing drum machines and becoming the human metronome opposite Adam Clayton. So next time someone brings up the amazing effects that comes out of the Edge, you might want to take a second look at the living, breathing entity Larry Mullen Jr. birthed behind the kit.
