10 Most Underrated Drummers Of All Time

2. Phil Taylor - Motorhead

Most of the metal world was a bit shellshocked once thrash metal started to pick up steam. As opposed to the typical mammoth drum performances coming out of someone like John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, this insanely fast double bass and relentless rhythm was definitely a game changer for aspiring metal drummers. However, all those who learn their drumming chops from Metallica don't realize they're learning it second hand.

Long before thrash became the go-to genre for extreme drumming, Phil Taylor was really the litmus test that everyone should have been looking at. Pairing just alongside Lemmy in Motorhead, "Philthy" was just the shot of adrenaline to take these songs to the heights that reached, coming in like thunder on tracks like Ace of Spades and Damage Case. The greatest contribution to metal music has to be Overkill, whose intro features one of the greatest showcases for double bass drums ever in rock music.

That's before you even get to his chemistry with Lemmy himself, oftentimes being in lock step with the thick bass grooves coming from out front. Though a lot of Motorhead songs suffer from sounding like one another from time to time, when you have someone like this behind the kit, do you really need to change anything else?
