10 Most Underrated Drummers Of All Time

1. Cozy Powell - Various

Cozy Powell has been one of the few faceless legends to come out of the '70s era of rock music. Being primarily a session player for most of his career, Powell's short-lived time in the spotlight never really could be tied to a single band. Nevertheless, even if you don't know the man's name, you sure as hell have heard his drumming countless times.

Being at the forefront of hard rock, Cozy's approach to drumming seemed ripped straight out of the John Bonham school of drumming, with the focus being on some of the most immense sounding percussion ever conceived. Originally starting out sitting in with Jeff Beck, the first real classics came when he sat in with Rainbow, which made for one of the greatest drum intros of all time at the start of Stargazer. However, Powell always seemed to never fit in well with one set band, instead electing to flip flop with acts like Whitesnake and even a stint on a Black Sabbath album over the years.

That wasn't able to stop his wild man status though, with him perishing in a car crash at the age of 50 during some downtime in between tours. For as much of a wild presence he may have been, you don't get asked to be in some of the heaviest acts of all time and not have the chops to actually pull all of them off like this.
