10 Most Underrated Female Rock Bands Of All Time
2. The Runaways
For a good portion of the '70s, the face of punk rock was predominantly male. If you were looking in any punk rock magazine from the golden age of '77, you get a lot more images of Johnny Rotten and not a ton of people like Wendy O Williams in the mix. If you just chose to ignore the female population, you were going to have to deal with a band that was nothing but strong females.
Although people tend to think of the Runaways as an industry plant made up by mogul Kim Fowley, the man may have lucked out by having such a strong lineup of women at the helm to make these records. Starting off when some of them were still in their late teens, songs like Cherry Bomb and School Days are still a perfect blend of pop smarts and the internal edginess that everyone feels when they're just discovering rock and roll.
That's not to say that each of these women didn't go on to do bigger and better things later, with Lita Ford going in a metal direction for her solo career and Joan Jett staking her claim as the Godmother of punk later down the line. Both of these ladies have carved out their names in rock and roll, but if you consider yourself a fan, you need to dig up where the magic came from.
