10 Most Underrated Foo Fighters Songs
4. Friend of a Friend - In Your Honor
During the first few shows with the Foo Fighters, every single question that Dave was asked was usually about Nirvana. Whether it be old fans resenting him for starting another band or asking if the songs were about Kurt, the overarching shadow of Nirvana seemed to loom like an albatross around Dave's neck for a long time. After he got his own rock and roll credentials as a frontman though, Dave actually felt comfortable enough to address it on In Your Honor.
Towards the back half of the acoustic album, we get Friend of a Friend, which consists of just Dave and a guitar talking about a former friend. The subject matter is pretty vague, but it's pretty clear that he's talking about Kurt from the way that he describes him, from his friends' guitar that he borrowed to everyone paying attention to him whenever he played.
There is a lot of love in this track, but there's also a bit of sadness in the way that Dave describes Kurt's life. You can tell that he has a lot of reverence for his friend, but he knows that the tightrope that he had to walk as the voice of his generation was something that wore him down a lot. Still, if Kurt would have been able to hear this song, he probably would have been proud to hear how far his friend had come as a songwriter.
