10 Most Underrated Green Day Songs
7. Going To Pasalacqua - 39 Smooth
When Green Day first started getting the ball rolling, no one could have expected these guys to lead the next revolution of rock. Complete with some of the most amateurish production style and a slipshot delivery from Billie Joe Armstrong, these guys just sounded like your stoner friends who occasionally liked to jam together. Though 39/Smooth is far from the group's finest moment, there are a few hints of the brilliance that was to come.
As the guitars fade in, Going to Pasalacqua is Green Day starting to come into their own, with Billie Joe actually feeling comfortable in the frontman role as he leads the rest of the band into the song on the opening line "here we go again." It's almost like you're hearing the start of Green Day's signature sound starting to form, even if Billie's voice is a bit too child-like than most punk rock aficionados were really ready for.
While this song could have easily ended up on Dookie if it were written later, the real kneecap of the song comes in Al Sobrante, whose original position behind the drum stool pales in comparison to Tre Cool's more muscly delivery. This track showed that there was a lot of potential for Green Day to be something great, but it would be a few more years before we got the real polish.
