10 Most Underrated Green Day Songs
6. Suffocate - Shenanigans
Whenever bands release B-side compilations, it's not really a good sign. As opposed to a new album of material, these random compilations that are spit out by big labels end up feeling like cash grabs as the artist struggles to come up with something of value. However, there was one question that loomed large over Green Day's Shenanigans: "how the hell were some of these not singles?."
Yes, really. Despite some of the obscure covers of everyone from the Ramones to the Kinks, the original compositions on this album are actually some of the most overlooked gems in the Green Day's catalog. Rather than just lure you in, the record explodes right out of the gate with Suffocate, whose hook line is one of the most infectious of the band's '90s output.
Originally a leftover from the Nimrod sessions, this is a stark look at Armstrong's struggles with addiction, as he wakes at 3 AM coming to terms with the fact that he will end up dead if he carries on his rock and roll lifestyle.
Considering Nimrod was all about growing out of the old punk rock skin, it's a wonder why this wasn't included on the original track listing. Billie Joe had expressed a desire to make Nimrod a double album, and if a song like this was an inkling of what that looked like, that grand plan could have actually worked out.
