10 Most Underrated Grunge Bands Of All Time

4. Toadies

Unlike many of the bands on this list, Toadies came not from the rainy woodlands of the northwest but from Texas, and those sun-soaked climes may go some way to explaining their sound, a bouncier and more obviously anthemic collection of songs than most of their grunge contemporaries. Many of the scene’s acts were heavily inspired by Pixies, but few more so than Toadies.

This is particularly notable on their major hit “Possum Kingdom”, with its quiet/loud dynamics and sugary guitar tone contrasted with anguished vocals. It’s a high point of their debut album Rubberneck, along with tracks like “Tyler” and the hard rocker “Backslider”.

With their radio friendly sound, Toadies were swiftly nabbed by major label Interscope, who immediately mishandled and squandered the group. Subsequent albums were poorly promoted and often forgotten about altogether by their handlers, but their follow ups, particularly 2008’s No Deliverance, have plenty to offer.

To this end they’re essentially grunge’s survivors, continuing to put out good music as recently as 2017.
