10 Most Underrated Hard Rock Albums Of The 2000's
3. Backspacer - Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam were in a dangerous spot towards the end of the 2000's. Though the band had had a phenomenal run in the 90's, more experimental efforts like Binaural and Riot Act showed the band coming dangerously close to falling into "has-been" territory. Finally emerging from their funk, Backspacer showed that the band could still impress us.
This record might not have the staying power of a record like Vs., but the band's take on garage rock and new wave make for some of the most infectious hooks of their career like on "The Fixer" and "Got Some." Coming right after their almost-conceptual self-titled record, this record showed the band getting back to being a no-nonsense rock act, with even elements of punk creeping in on "Supersonic."
While the rock tracks go pretty hard, slower moments like "Just Breathe" and "The End" have to be some of the most heartbreaking moments in the band's catalog, with Eddie Vedder wearing his heart on his sleeve as he deals with the loss of friends and family. This isn't necessarily going to be the Pearl Jam record that will set the world on fire, but the amount of great material on display makes it a worthy inclusion as one of the greatest in their discography.
