10 Most Underrated Kanye West Songs
1. Say You Will - 808s and Heartbreak
Since Kanye's run of albums from College Dropout to Graduation were more straight ahead hip hop, it was a bit of a hard sell for fans to transition into something like 808s & Heartbreak. Being one of the first albums where Kanye sings throughout most of the track listing, you could tell that our favorite college slacker had finally grown up into a world gone dark. As if the title wasn't enough, fans got the biggest mission statement on the very first track.
Compared to the more humorous starts to his albums, Say You Will may be on par with Dark Fantasy as one of Kanye's greatest openings to an album, with synthesizers that feel incredibly icy. Instead of leading us into the song with some epic spiel, West lets the backing track sink in before going into his plea for love, as he begs for his girlfriend to take him back after all they've been through.
While many have seen a little too much into Kanye's life as of late, this was the first time something like this felt truly intimate, as if you're listening to a love letter that you were never supposed to hear. Even as the song plays out, the backing track dominates the back half, as we let the slow sense of heartache close in around you. Kanye may have been on top of the world, but this was the start of a dark tunnel with no real end in sight.
