10 Most Underrated Kanye West Songs
4. Hell of a Life - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
It's impossible to really discuss anything about My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy that hasn't already been said in a million other places. Since arriving on the scene with a vengeance back in 2010, the entire music industry has been ready to prop Ye's fifth album up as a modern classic a few years after it was actually released. As much as some people might like to dissect this record though, there's a lot more going on here than strictly hip hop.
Going for a more antagonistic angle in the second half of the record, Hell of a Life is one of the more hedonistic moments of Kanye's career, as he tries to entice his fiance into coming with him to the darker side of life. Compared to the overblown production on the rest of the record, this rivals POWER in terms of raw force, as everything starts distorting around Ye's verses to make for one of the more luscious sonic tapestries he had ever made.
Beyond just the beat, you can even hear bits and pieces from world music, complex rhythmic switches in the backbeat, and even Ye cribbing the melody from Black Sabbath's Iron Man to drench the song in its unholy swagger. While this was what brought Kanye into legend status, this was the first sign that the years to follow were going to be a rough ride.
