10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
1. Of Wolf And Man
The Black Album is known as the one record that divided Metallica fans right down the middle. Even though the band were bigger than ever, many diehards could not forgive their more commercial direction on songs like "Nothing Else Matters" and "Enter Sandman." Though the band may have toned things down a bit, they could still create something spectacular on "Of Wolf and Man."
Appearing right after "Nothing Else Matters," this song puts the listener back in the metal mood from the very start, with a riff utilizing the more crunchy guitar style the band were so great at delivering. The song structure may be incredibly solid, but this may be the most unusual lyrics that Metallica has ever attempted, and dammit if they don't succeed with flying colors.
As opposed to their usual depictions of war, this track goes more elemental as Hetfield describes a man who turns into a werewolf whenever the night comes. The backing track does a fantastic job at sounding primal, but is also able to bring the track to a peak in the chorus, almost as if they're sonically capturing the process of shapeshifting into an animalistic beast.
By switching up the lyrical style, this was the type of song that both gave fans something new while staying rooted in the thrash metal the band had perfected.
