10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
4. Trapped Under Ice
Whenever fans bring up the best of Metallica's catalog, it's pretty much a safe bet to put anything the band released in the 80's as their greatest work. While fans flock to their personal favorites, James Hetfield has mentioned that his favorite album out of them all is Ride the Lightning. Though it's easy to respectfully disagree given the band's many triumphs, their second effort is something special given the strength of its lowlights.
On first glance, "Trapped Under Ice" isn't anything too out of the ordinary, with much of the track being the thrash metal most bands were becoming known for. However, the relentless groove of the track along with the manic lyricism is enough to keep any fan of heavy music engaged. The entire track is based around waking up only to find yourself cryogenically imprisoned in ice. The sense of panic that comes from the main riff and Kirk Hammett's solo just add more fuel to the instrumental engine.
For all its great moments, the band have never talked about this track that much and have very seldom performed it live. The band themselves may think of it as just a filler track, but this by-the-numbers thrash track is more than many bands hope to achieve throughout an entire career.
