10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
3. Minus Human
Metallica had taken a very bold step when they decided to create the S&M concert with Michael Kamen. Given metal's reputation as a dirty genre, it was something special to see some of the band's work accented by the sounds of an orchestra. While the band's classics sounded great and the new single "No Leaf Clover" got some attention, "-Human" was yet another impressive highlight of the record.
Like "No Leaf Clover," this track was specifically made for the concert, with the arrangement being more in tune with what you would hear from an orchestral suite. As opposed to the other tracks on the record, this one feels like Metallica's instrumentation is providing backup to the orchestra rather than the other way around, but that's not a bad thing at all.
To get greater depth out of their instruments, this tune was tuned down to drop C#, which was unheard of by Metallica standards at that point. James' performance on this track is absolutely hypnotic as he goes between tunefulness and a deep-seated growl.
The song may not have had a proper solo, but the feel of this song is so brutal that any flashy playing would take away from its groove. S&M may seem like a vanity project by some, but tracks like this show just how much thought and care was put into these epic tunes.
