10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
8. Of Wolf And Man - The Black Album
It's pretty hard to find anything about the Black Album that could be considered underrated.
For as many million copies that have been sold around the world, this one record has become the Dark Side of the Moon of metal, with every other track being a classic. "Enter Sandman" might still hold up after all these years, but "Of Wolf and Man" taps into something even creepier.
Metallica are certainly no strangers to heavy subject matter, but this tale of a man turning into a werewolf during the full moon is one of the most vivid sonic journeys they've ever made.
The actual composition might be rooted in the thrash of their early years, but the real emotion comes with the way the chorus is constructed. As the chords break apart and you hear Hetfield scream "SHAPESHIFT!," it sounds like he's slowly losing control of his humanity, almost in mid transformation.
Not only does this give you an adrenaline rush, but it also recontextaulizes the rest of the song, with the chugging rhythm almost painting a picture of this deranged beast stalking his prey through the countryside. Metallica may indulge in some goofy lyrics from time to time, but this attempt at a fantasy narrative is so impressive it deserves its own theatrical rock production.
