10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
5. Mercyful Fate - Garage Inc.
When you're talking about some of the greatest material a band has put out, it gets a bit tricky when talking about cover songs. After all, since it's not really their song, how can it be judged as something artistically groundbreaking? There's a lot of debate amongst fans about the legitimacy of covers, but when Metallica stepped up to the plate for Garage Inc., they turned in one of their finest performances.
Always a fan of old school metal, the band were particularly enamored with the theatrical rock act Mercyful Fate led by madman King Diamond. The band couldn't quite pin down which song to do...so they ended up doing a bunch of them. Rather than do multiple covers of the same artist, this track is an 11 minute medley of Mercyful Fate cuts, from "Evil" to "Curse of the Pharoah" to "Satan's Fall."
You can definitely hear the old school metal influence, but the band play it so well that is just ends up sounding like a great Metallica cut that never saw the light of day. From the tasty Kirk Hammett leads to the smooth transitions into each section, this is Metallica at their most uninhibited, as they have a blast paying tribute to their heroes.
All of these pieces put together shouldn't really work, but somehow the metal overlords found a way to make one of the most questionable ideas look seemless.
