10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs

6. Low Man's Lyric - Reload

There is an entire generation of Metallica fans who wishes they could forget the Load/Reload era of this band.

While some songs may have been good like "Fuel" and "The Unforgiven II," the entire project seemed like Metallica watering their sound down further to win favor with the hard rock and grunge crowd. The band may have cut corners in places, but when they ended up experimenting, some of the results were absolutely stunning.

From the very beginning, "Low Man's Lyric" sounds almost nothing like a Metallica song, with a clean guitar leading the charge and a hurdy gurdy pumping out the main melody. Though this may have been a different breed of Metallica, the dark subject matter hasn't changed, with Hetfield telling the story of a homeless junkie seeking redemption from his family.

The entire thing is almost heartfelt in a way, but the dark turn in the bridge brings us back to Earth, as our protagonist seeks to get clean but knows that he will just return to his seedy roots all over again. Change was definitely in the air for thrash metal at the time, but leave it to Metallica to make their twisted version of a country song and actually make it sound heavy.
