10 Most Underrated Metallica Songs
2. The Thing That Should Not Be - Master Of Puppets
From the very start of their career, Metallica never wanted to be a metal band that wrote solely about demons and dragons.
For as many bands as there were writing about the supernatural evils of the world, Metallica were more concerned with the everyday evils, from the war horrors of "Disposable Heroes" to the tragic figure at the heart of "The Unforgiven." On the other hand, things did take a turn for the epic when the band did end up discussing more beastly material.
Fitting snuggly between the heavy hitters on Master of Puppets, "The Thing That Should Not Be" was the band's first lyrical attempt to depict Cthulu, with one of the heaviest grooves in the band's canon. While the tune starts off ominous with a few clean guitar notes, the song builds with the start of the verses, as Hetfield depicts the horrific sight he sees emerging from the abyss.
As we reach the breakdown, the band ascends even further, almost like we're looking at Cthulu making his way across the Earth. Being one of the first songs the band tuned down for, this song is the subtle taste of menace creeping through Metallica's instruments. Master of Puppets isn't short of any classic material, but this song deserves to be right alongside the title track and "Orion" as one this album's masterpieces.
