10 Most Underrated Ozzy Osbourne Songs
3. Diary Of A Madman - Diary Of A Madman
The hard rock community has pretty much put a golden halo on Ozzy's first two records with Randy Rhaods. Since the guitar legend was taken from us way too soon, the deep dive into the back catalog of Ozzy contains some of the most innovative and experimental moments to be found on any metal release. Though there was always a classical bent to Randy's playing, Diary of a Madman occupies a different sonic space. Namely...jazz.
Across the final track on Ozzy's second album, you can really tell that Randy is just reaching to find some different sounds coming out of his guitar, as he pulls out weird chords that you wouldn't find in the same neighborhood as the traditional bluesy stuff Ozzy was known for. Given that this is also the dramatic closing track on the album, its longer length is the perfect showcase for Randy's technique, as he blows through one brilliant lead run after the next, no doubt inspiring guys like Kirk Hammett and Michael Schenker to step it up a notch.
While this is clearly one of the best performances of Ozzy's early period, it's a shame once you realize that this is one of the final pieces of music Randy was able to lay down before perishing in a plane crash a few months later. So next time you want to wax poetic about this guitar legend, remember to include this tune in with the other Ozzy classics.
