10 Most Underrated Paul McCartney Songs
9. Junk - McCartney
At the start of 1970, there was no real road map for where Paul could go next. After being the bassist and key songwriter for one of the biggest bands of the previous decade, what happens when you find yourself without the rest of your mates? Though he may have been known as a perfectionist in the Beatles, Junk showed us the warts-and-all Paul McCartney no one knew we needed.
For the most part, McCartney's self-titled is way too rough around the edges, with some of the most fragmented compositions he has ever released to the public. While Maybe I'm Amazed has gotten its due throughout the years, there's a certain spare beauty that comes in the form of Junk. Written while the Beatles were still together, you can still hear Paul's incredible gift for melody, as he uses almost jazzy chords that would have fit right in on something like Mother Nature's Son from the same era.
Then again, it makes sense why this was never issued as a full-on single, considering that most of it sounds like a demo, as Paul gets a feel for the instruments he has at his disposal. This would have made for an unstoppable ballad later down the line, but as far as demos go, you could certainly do much worse than this.
