10 Most Underrated Paul McCartney Songs

7. Jenny Wren - Chaos and Creation in the Backyard

As the '00s turned a corner, Paul didn't really need to rely on a hit single anymore. After fully recovering from the death of his wife Linda, he was now making music for himself regardless of what the cynics may have thought of it. On the other hand, what happens when you pair one of the greatest rock songwriters of all time with the producer behind Radiohead's greatest records?

Across Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, you can tell that Paul is getting back in tune with what would become his signature modern style, with pop tunes that toed the line between extremely catchy and lyrically complex. Though there are plenty of great tunes to go around on this record, Jenny Wren is the one take that has a few faint wisps of the early days laced throughout.

Set to a simple acoustic guitar line, you can almost hear echoes of Blackbird in the song construction, especially as we hear McCartney talk about the struggles of our protagonist who has weathered most of life's hardships, from heartache to poverty. Even though there aren't too many lyrics on this one, every single line tends to have some significance behind it, from seeing the world's foolishness to spending days casting love aside. Paul had certainly come a long way since his Beatle years, but Jenny Wren is a perfect example of a song that is both reminiscent of his old style while also pointing a path towards the future.
