10 Most Underrated Pearl Jam Songs
7. Supersonic - Backspacer
In the years since the '90s, it felt like Pearl Jam had slowly started to lose their anger. I mean, these were the guys that were known to kick down the door on songs like Even Flow, only to turn in one sappy song after another once the '00s really kicked into gear. Once we reached the end of the decade, Backspacer ended up waking most of us right the hell up.
Though the Fixer is still one of the band's greatest late-period tracks, the sound of Supersonic is the closest they've sounded to going full on punk since their heyday. Set at one of the most breakneck speeds of the record, this is the kind of song that's meant to blast out of your car, almost like the band are trying to get off the ground through the sheer energy coming out of their instruments.
This is also a great track about the love of rock and roll, with most of the lyrics from Eddie just talking about how great it is to be a music fan and the wonder that music can give you. Since Johnny Ramone had passed a few years prior to this album, this is also probably the closest thing to a Ramones style tribute that we could have ever gotten. Ripping off an Oasis title may have been cheeky, but you can give it a pass when the end result hits like this.
