10 Most Underrated Rock Albums Of The 90s
3. Tiny Music - Stone Temple Pilots
A lot of people tend to skip over how quickly the grunge empire abruptly died off. Since the big 4 of the genre were all struggling in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death, a lot of the hopefuls had to autocorrect to a different kind of sound that wasn't nearly as miserable than what we had gone through for the past few years. Many bands didn't make it to the other side, and yet one of the few that thrived were the ones that were originally the laughing stock of the grunge wave.
Around the time that Stone Temple Pilots were first coming up the ranks, they were originally cast out for being a carbon copy of Pearl Jam in many people's eyes. Those fans did not have that same complaint on Tiny Music though, seeing these supposed sellouts morphing into a glammified version of classic rock, with songs like Big Bang Baby sounding like they were ripped right out of T. Rex's playbook.
There were even a handful of weird tangents sprinkled into the mix, like the more atmospheric sounds on Adhesive or the kind of jazzy chords that are on display in songs like Trippin on a Hole in a Paper Heart. With just one album, STP were proving to the world that they were a lot more than a bunch of hacks with a grunge aesthetic behind them.
