10 Most Underrated Rock Ballads Of All Time
3. Waterfalls - Paul McCartney
It's uncanny to think that some of Paul McCartney's greatest works almost happened by accident. Even going back to his Beatle days, Macca had always claimed that him writing a song as perfect as Yesterday had to have been a complete fluke. And when it came time for him to go solo for a second time, he even managed to turn in this little piece of beauty along the way.
While McCartney II is by no means Macca's finest creation, there's a certain fragility behind a song like Waterfalls that speaks to something much more than experimentation. Having written it back in the day but never finding the right setting, hearing the primitive strings play the melody of this song is almost jarring, as if Paul is discovering this song along with us and trying to make the most of it while he can.
For a man that has found different ways to write love songs time and time again, hearing him getting right to the point and saying "I need love" is actually pretty refreshing at this point. If anything, this isn't just a song about wanting to be loved. Macca is singing his wife Linda as if she's a part of himself, and making sure that she won't abandon him. After turning the love song formula inside out, this is the most logical conclusion. You love them, but after a while you also depend on them.
