10 Most Underrated Rock Bands Of The 90s
7. Counting Crows
Contrary to what you would hear, the alternative rock revolution was about more than sludgy riffs. If you look back on the early grunge bands, not all of them had to necessarily sound like your typical grunge act all the time, only scowling and making music that sounded like it was being played out of some dude's basement on a rainy day. Alt rock was about bringing things back to basics, and Counting Crows understood exactly that.
If you think about them now though, Counting Crows feels more like a one album wonder, with most of the band's greatest hits coming off of their debut August and Everything After. Outside of that one phenomenal record though, Adam Duritz was one hell of a songwriter who was more than willing to take things to the next level. On their next album Recovering the Satellites, the band ended up actually growing up, going for a much more mature sound that still felt at home with the classics.
Granted, not everything that the band has done has necessarily been the greatest, with some of their biggest songs actually being a staple of Shrek 2 of all things. If you're willing to take the plunge into their back catalog though, this is the kind of contemporary rock that wouldn't feel that out of place sitting next to your dad's old vinyl collection.
