10 Most Underrated Rock Bands Of The 90s
3. Semisonic
If you looked at the state of rock between the start of grunge and the end of the decade, it looked like the entire scene had completely changed overnight. After being immersed in irony and getting more and more cynical by the minute, the next phase of rock was a lot more sunny than normal, catering to bands like Smash Mouth over the Smashing Pumpkins. Though this became a time for a lot of flash in the pans, Semisonic definitely warranted more than just a single flash.
Coming up from the city of Chicago, Dan Wilson was one of the best songwriters in pop rock at the time, which led them to superstardom off the back of their hit single Closing Time. Once the whiskey and beer cleared out though, the rest of the band's work never really found their place in the shuffle, being too pop for rock and too rock for pop and landing somewhere in the middle.
Of their limited output though, albums like All About Chemistry and Feeling Strangely Fine are among some of the best pop rock records of the late '90s, paving the way for other pop friendly acts like the Fratellis or Fountains of Wayne. Seeing how Wilson has found his calling co writing songs for pop stars like Adele though, we'll have to see if an act like Semisonic even has a future in today's music scene.
