10 Most Underrated Rock Bands Of The 90s
4. Mother Love Bone
As the '90s started, Seattle was quickly starting to develop its own sound...it just wasn't clear as to what it was yet. Though you had bands like Tad that were going for that trademark metallic sound at the time, there was also an attention to melody with some bands that looked to a future beyond playing at the Off Ramp every night. And on the other side of that coin we find Mother Love Bone, with the greatest frontman that never was.
When the band were first cutting their teeth, there was a lot more freewheeling fun to be had at their shows, with Andy Wood quickly turning into one of the greatest frontmen in town. Modeling himself after his idol Freddie Mercury, Wood adopted a sound that was ready for stadiums while having an almost funk style flair, similar to what the Chili Peppers were doing around the same time.
Time wouldn't be kind to them though, with Wood dying of a drug overdose a few days shy of their first album coming out, with the band left in limbo. After considering their future, guitarist Stone Gossard decided to soldier on with Jeff Ament to form Pearl Jam, giving themselves a complete second wind at stardom. Though Mother Love Bone wasn't the breakout band of the '90s, their spirit is felt across every band that has ever come from Seattle.
