10 Most Underrated Rock Songs Of The 2000s
1. The Static Age - Green Day
Over the years, time has not been all that kind to 21st Century Breakdown by Green Day. As fans start to reevaluate it, most have spoken out against how it is trying to blatantly copy the template these pop punk brats had already set up for themselves on American Idiot. That doesn't mean that they had forgotten how to write a few awesome tunes along the way though.
Going into the final stretch of the record, the Static Age has got to be one of the catchiest to ever come from the '00s era of Green Day. From the way it's riff plays off the chord changes to the stagnant way it parallels the fear of technology, Billie Joe Armstrong seemed to write an answer to Cheap Trick on this song, as all of the power pop tropes are brought out in full force. While there's not much of a solo or anything to be found in here, the mid-song build up and changing keys really puts the tune over the top in terms of raw dynamics.
As such, Green Day really sound like they've settled into their rock star boots on this record, with Butch Vig off-setting everything to near perfection. Becoming a whole different monster whenever they played it live, The Static Age takes all of the drama that a rock opera could provide and put into one masterpiece of a track.
