10 Most Underrated Rock Songs Of The 2000s
2. Uncle Jonny - The Killers
It seemed that most of the rock world wanted to go back to the glory days around the turn of the millennium. Outside of the throw backs to garage rock coming from acts like the White Stripes, the Killers burst onto the scene with Hot Fuss bringing back the squelchy synthesizers that we all knew and loved from the '80s. Just when you though they were going to hit us with another helping of that, Sam's Town turned into one of the most adventurous records of the decade.
Rather than double down, Brandon Flowers coated this record in Americana, almost as if he was giving an answer to the Bruce Springsteens of the world. Along with the more earnest writing style though, all the dials were turned up for Uncle Jonny, which depicts a troubled relationship that may or may not have been based on a true story.
As Dave Keunig's guitar sets everything up, you can hear Flowers almost frantic over this track, as he condemns his Uncle for the hurt that he has caused his family at the expense of his excesses. Though he says that things are going to be alright, the off-kilter nature of the riff feels like it's just like putting a bandage over a gaping wound. This wasn't a fun story for Brandon to tell, but it cuts to the bone in a way that few other Killers songs can hope to.
