10 Most Underrated Slipknot Songs
8. Vermilion Pt. 2
In the grand scheme of Slipknot's discography, Vol III tends to get equal praise and vitriol from fans. While this album helped the band nab their first Grammy, the more accessible sound of radio singles like "Duality" were a bit more than many Maggots could stomach. However, no one said the darkness had to go away once the band slowed it down.
One of the standout tracks from the album is "Vermilion," which balances out a twisted tale of unrequited love while still remaining incredibly tuneful. The song did amazingly well as a single, but its sister song taps into something much more tortured. From a compositional standpoint, the two songs are nearly identical, but the downplayed arrangement of just an acoustic guitar and Corey's vocal opens up the entire tune.
Since the song is one of only a handful of Slipknot tunes about jilted love, it's much more feral when you realize the object of the narrator's affection is completely imaginary.
Even though the music of the single illustrated it perfectly, the way Taylor sings "I won't let this build up inside of me" sounds like a mentally ill man trying to make his way back to sanity. It might not be the heaviest tune of their career, but "Vermilion Pt. 2" is the one Slipknot song which has its nerves completely exposed.
