10 Most Underrated Slipknot Songs

7. Surfacing

The 9's debut release is one of the turning points for the nu metal genre. Though none of these mask-clad maniacs really belonged in the same genre that birthed Korn, their emphasis on rhythms and hard-as-hell grooves made it easy for people to make the transition over to the heavier side of the tracks.

There's a strong lineup of classics across the record, but "Surfacing" hints at something a little more visceral.

For most of the song, there's not really much to the composition, with the main guitar lick being nothing more than a simple bend, but it's what they do with it that matters. As the song goes along, the verses feel like they're about to boil over before leading to a sonic stampede across your eardrums as Corey Taylor has some colorful ways of expressing his distaste for the world.

Whereas most of the band's debut was fun to begin with, this was one of the first tunes that went from being edgy metal thrashing to something a little more sinister. The most memorable line from the tune is "I am the push that makes you move," and by the time the song is over, the groove has taken you from a mild mannered listener to a feral animal.
