10 Most Underrated Slipknot Songs
5. XIX
Slipknot was dealt one of the heaviest blows a band could deal with in the spring of 2010. After years of being the backbone of the band and the heart of the music, bassist Paul Gray was found dead in his hotel room of an apparent overdose. Though Gray's death wasn't enough to kill the band, the foundation would be a completely different animal without him.
Once the band began unveiling their new album .5 The Gray Chapter, it was clear that we would be in for something full of raw emotion. Even with all the anger present on songs like "Custer" or "The Devil In I," the opening blast of "XIX" sets everything up perfectly. Constructed as an almost funeral dirge on what sounds like bagpipes, the whole song feels like an Irish wake for the band's fallen comrade.
Though Corey Taylor's vocals are incredibly melodic, the sheer volume of his voice shows that he's holding back a lot of pent-up anger towards his brother's demise. It might not have as many huge solos or drum fills, but this slow plodding melody lets us know the pure pain that would come through on this release.
The Gray Chapter tends to be towards the bottom of Slipknot's recorded output, but this opening cut sure as hell set everything up nicely.
