10 Most Underrated Twenty One Pilots Songs

8. Johnny Boy - Self-Titled (2009)

The band’s self-titled debut came out way back in 2009. Though the signature genre bouncing is still here, the record is very different to their more recent releases.

All of the songs are driven by Joseph’s piano playing, and ‘Johnny Boy’ is no exception. It starts with an upbeat melody before the chorus arrives and hooks you in with a terrific vocal performance.

The song works as a sing-along tune, but the real highlight is the lyrical content. Joseph explores the concept of wearing a mask and being there for others while struggling to ask for help. It’s a deep topic that’s all too easy to miss given how many hooks there are.

'Johnny Boy' is also a great example of Joseph’s ability to write sad songs that sound happy, and this intriguing dynamic has now become a key part of the band’s sound.
