10 Most Unforgettable Super Bowl Halftime Performances Ever

5. Prince (2007)

The pint-sized rocker is legendary for his breathless performances and his set at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2007 was no different. Nobody quite knew what to expect from Prince and he surprised a lot of people by performing a medley of his own classics along with covers of a couple of other artists' songs. Opening with Queen's We Will Rock You, Prince segued into his own Let's Go Crazy, Baby I'm A Star before tackling Creddence's Proud Mary, Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower and The Foo Fighter's Best Of You. He saved the best 'til last, however, with a truly spectacular version of Purple Rain as the heavens opened and stage got soaked. It was a perfect ending, watched by 140 million people on worldwide television. The performance created a little bit of controversy owing to a shot of a silhouetted Prince holding his purple symbol guitar. Commentators felt the image was inappropriately phallic and out-of-place but, come on. He did Purple Rain in the rain, for goodness sake.
