10 Music Artists That Won't Defend Their Own Songs
4. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
If you thought that Dave Grohl was a little bit harsh towards some of his songs, he only learned it from the best. When he was still behind the kit for Nirvana, Kurt Cobain was always one of the harshest critics of his own work, never really managing to equal the sounds that he heard in his head. Though most of the studio versions of songs never came together, Kurt was absolutely furious about what happened to Smells Like Teen Spirit once grunge blew up.
Before they had become superstars, Kurt was actually fairly proud of the lyrics about rebellion and teenagers being desensitized, only to have people completely miss the point when the song actually blew up. Roping in an entirely different crowd of jocks that used to pick on him when he was in high school, Kurt became a lot more distant to Teen Spirit and Nevermind as a whole, saying that it was way too overproduced and that it sounded closer to a Motley Crue record than what he intended to be a punk record.
As their star continued to rise though, you can see him getting more resentful of the hit that made him famous, either refusing to play it live, playing it as obnoxiously as possible, and even sidestepping it entirely when it came time for some of their more memorable gigs. Your muse can be a powerful thing to put into words, but when someone takes all of your thoughts out of context, some of that love is lost along the way too.
