10 Music Videos That Changed Music Forever
8. My Name Is - Eminem
Eminem has been known for his more disturbing side throughout his career. While he has plenty of pump-up anthems in his back catalog, the greatest artistic moments of his glory days were when he was the psychotic MC that was as endearing as he was violent. And it all began with this one video...
The entire video seems to take the piss out of every single pop culture phenomenon that was mainstream at the time. From Em dressing up in teacher regalia to mocking the Clinton administration to donning the shock rock affectations of Marilyn Manson, nothing was off the table when it came to calling out artificial celebrities. The song itself was also a good starting point, with Mr. Mathers cutting right to the chase about his less-than-stellar home life with his mom and his tendency towards violence in his everyday life.
Rappers tended to live in their own world, but this showed Eminem joining the likes of Tupac and Snoop Dogg as the next rock star rapper. Em's video for "Stan" is definitely one of his more notable visual works, but "My Name Is" took everything we would expect from Slim Shady's off-color performances and condensed it into just a few glorious minutes.
