10 Musical Artists Who Are Keeping Funk Alive

2. Snarky Puppy

"Technical" might be the one word a new listener would use to describe Snarky Puppy. No surprise there, as the band's compositions are known for complex runs, intricate rhythms, and blazing solos. With a rotating cast of some forty members, each has to be on the top of their game to ensure the elements of every song come together as they were meant to.

Though, founder Michael League has also described the group as being heavily pop-influenced. No doubt a consequence of the tenures of their lineup. Individual band members have backed Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dogg, Lalah Hathaway, and a range of other popular acts. Each brings a different flavor to Snarky Puppy's overall sound as it melds into a signature brand of jazz-tinged funky-pop.

Their most recent album, 2016's Culcha Vulva, earned them a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. With tracks like GØ and The Simple Life, it's not hard to see why. While staying true to the original intent of the genre, they've expanded funk to include a new layer of sophistication, marked by robust jazz and fusion inspirations.
