10 Musical Artists Who Are Keeping Funk Alive

3. Water Seed

"We Are Stars," Water Seed proclaims on their 2017 album of the same name. The New Orleans-based group, formed at Xavier University, heads into waters first charted by The Gap Band and Cameo. However, they bring their own contemporary flavor on the journey as they come into their own.

The loose rhythms, exuberance, and obvious gospel influences make their presence known across the fourteen track release, particularly on tunes like Arithmetic, which showcases a heavy, synthesized bass line and a jocular trombone feature.

The band credits their hometown with bestowing upon them the ability to span the gap between genres, along with their knack for staying on target throughout their music. While the band's instrumentalists have the ability to launch into extended solos, they make sure it stays short and tight. Not a single element overstays its welcome, keeping listeners on their toes and keeping the sounds on We Are Stars fresh and evolving.

Then there are the vocals. Home To You takes listeners to church with a simple gospel progression behind a touching love song. The cleverly titled Funktimus Prime features a soulful group effort, backed with shades of Average White Band-style guitar and bass licks.

Flaunting their songwriting talent, the group follows up with a tightly composed piece, I Forgot To Have Fun Today, reminiscent of a classic showtune. Water Seed's talent runs the gamut, and they provide something for every funk lover out there.
