10 Musical Collaborations That Didn't Really Work
1. Lulu - Metallica and Lou Reed
Throughout their history, Metallica have never been strangers to controversy. Even as far back as the '80s, you had fans getting angry at them because they had the gall to use a tiny bit of acoustic guitar on Fade to Black, which is now regarded as one of their greatest songs. Even with the change on the Black Album and the sacrilege sound of St. Anger, we still weren't ready for what we eventually got on Lulu.
Bringing together a metal band like Metallica alongside art rocker Lou Reed would have made for great news at the time, until we actually saw what they had in store. While the riffs on most of these songs are solid, the momentum gets sucked out of them the minute that Lou opens his mouth, as he starts reciting poetry where James Hetfield's traditional vocals would be. And when James does contribute a few lines here and there, it ends up on the wrong side of hilarious, like him emotionally singing "SMALL TOWN GIRL" on Brandenburg Gate or reminding us that he is indeed the table on "The View."
Then again, this isn't the kind of hilarity that actually makes for something fun. No, the only reason why we're laughing is to keep ourselves from weeping at just how far the mighty have fallen. Metallica have since gone back to their metal roots though, and we all still have the Hetfield table memes to enjoy until the end of time.
