10 Musical Collaborations That Didn't Really Work
5. Drawbar - Linkin Park and Tom Morello
Tom Morello doesn't really have to prove a point to anyone anymore. Ever since the breakup of Rage Against the Machine, Tom could have still been considered a legend of the genre if he decided to never pick up a guitar again, still having some of the weirdest sounds of the six string under his belt. If you're in the game long enough though, you need to make sure that you don't get rusty along the line.
Because when Linkin Park made The Hunting Party, Morello was one of the first names on the list to collaborate with, seeing the entire record as being a love letter to the kind of hard edged rock and roll that they loved as kids. And while people like Daron Malakian and Page Hamilton have some great moments on the record, you probably wouldn't have been able to spot Morello on Drawbar if you hadn't been told.
While the idea of a Linkin Park interlude should be fantastic news given their track record with Session and Cure For the Itch, this sort of ambient sound that Tom is going for here just doesn't work, especially when he plays licks that sound like he was recording someone's first few weeks playing guitar. Every collaborator should try to enhance the track that they're a part of, but you could take this entire track off of The Hunting Party altogether and probably not notice the difference.
