10 Musical Collaborations That Didn't Really Work

6. Illusion of Power - Black Sabbath and Ice T

Towards the end of the '80s, the idea of rock and hip hop working together was actually starting to gain some traction. In the wake of collaborations between Anthrax and Public Enemy, there was definitely a middle ground between the heaviness of metal guitar and the in your face production that you got from the golden age of hip hop. So when the real OGs of both genres come together, how did Illusion of Power fumble like it did?

While it could be easy to dismiss the haters not welcoming change, they do have a point when it comes to the first song on Black Sabbath's Forbidden. Though Ice T has never been shy about his love for metal music, hearing him alongside Tony Iommi's guitar feels a lot more disorienting, almost like he's trying to make the song sound heavy and coming off like he's trying to compete with Sabbath. And when you put yourself up against Sabbath in terms of heaviness, you lose EVERY SINGLE TIME!

Then again, it's not really that much of a competition on here, just having both of these two different styles inching close together but never quite gelling. Whereas something like Bring the Noise made too much sense back in the day, Illusion of Power is just having both of these legends standing next to each other and just hoping that everything comes together in the mix.
